XJ 650 Project

Post  Otto on Wed 3 Jun - 3:47

Hi y'all

here i'd like to show my far to be finished project.

Keep in mind that my budget is quite tight....so

Quick recap:

After one and half years without a bike, i tripped on this "thing" on marktplaats.nl

It appeared to be quite neglected, anyway it went away for about 400 euros.

Then, how it looks today (not yet finished)

I did i cheap home made repaint (even if the first pic didn't show it, the original paintjob was quite ruined), the rotten OEM exhaust were replaced togheter with blinkers, mirrors and tail light.

The clubman hadlebar i mounted unfortunately touches easily the tank (that's the reason for the ugly oval protection you see in the last pic), and at the moment i'm undecided if replace it with clip-ons by dropping the forks of 3-4 cm or search for a more "open" handlebar that gives me more clearance.

The same applies for the seat, still undecided if adapt a XS giuliari seat or swap it with a classic solo cafe racer pan (in this case, rear sets will be equipped)

Not yet present in the pics, two chrome shocks absorbers took the place of the worn-out couple you see.

One of the future steps, will be strip down the whole bike to sandblast and re-coat the whole frame togheter with a repaint of the engine and refurbishment of the wheel (or a swap with Virago wheels with spokes, as i already saw in other XJ cafe modded)

Nice project! Scoring a bike for 400 euros and modifying it yourself in a cheap and creative way, that's exactly the spirit!
I'm very curious to see the further developments... Keep up the good work!

Oh well, I've got 3 kids, I know a bit the story
"Pampers" times are over since quite a long time, but it's true that I stopped riding bikes for a couple of years , because of lack of time, money and energy. That's just the way things are...

Now I enjoy again riding as much as I want

That's a nice project you have there Otto.

I've got a similar “seat” decision to make with my Tiger project. Do I adapt a spare standard seat I have, or use a solo "bumstop" cafe racer seat? I think I'm going to adapt the spare first and see how it looks and feels.

Let us know which way you decide to go with yours.

Well, as first thing thanx to everybody for the nice comments!

Responding to Wallace, the things that attracts me more is the XS seat like this one

And put on the back fender a classical lucas style tail light.

In this moment i must say that the double cat-eye i installed looks better than the original tail light but the way i was forced to install it, (really inside the tail) gives a look too much "streetfighter" for my taste.

In my case, another option would be the re-use of the original tool box/tail light block, replacing the light with a round one or a single bigger cateye, eliminate the remaining fender and put the plate on new brackets

Sorry for the ridicolous "i-did-it-in-30-seconds-with-paint" image, it's just to give the idea
