LSR Sidecar

Post  Noisy Norton on Thu 12 Jun - 4:36

Not exactly a cafe racer. Its my LSR sidecar I'm building. I'm using a 500cc Weslake speedway motor. The older upright pushrod type. Its a newer version of the motor in my Norton. I had it in the Norton last year for a few test uns and its best run was just on 200kph. I was hoping to have it ready for the May El Mirage meet but it wasn't. It's basically all home made. I don't think Bakker Frambou will be getting nervous!

Re: LSR Sidecar

I'm bringing this thread back fro m the dead. I decided that this year is the years its going to race. Its been on and off for a while now. The Norton took up most off the time. One thing that was slowing frogress was the queston of how to start it. Yhe starter that works so great on the Norton wouldn't work on the sidecar. I finally figured it out and made up an alloy spacer, a piece of flat steel that had a large hex head welded to it and a car starter. The starter works beyond my best expectations.

One of the other hold ups was the gearbox. The Triumph gearbox I started with had (when run hard) one forward and four neutrals! I got a hold of an old Norton laid down box but wasn't happy. An AMC box from a Matchless finally turned up and that was the spur to get it finished. I also cut off the rear wheel mounting and re-did it along with new engine plates and some frame bracing. The body was cut a bit further as well.

Heres a couple of shots of it as it will run in four weeks time (at El Mirage dry lake).

This is the starter. Its from a Dodge truck and has a built in gear reduction.

Details of the sprocket end of the starter.

[img][/img]

Tryng it on for size. Fits well.

Thanks all for the good words and encouragement. Hopefully it will work next month and go fast. There has been a lot of changes since I started building it. This is a very early photo.

Its been a while since anything was posted here but I have been busy. I took the sidecar out to El Mirage for the May meet and FAILED scrutiny! Very embarrassing. They didn't like the handlebar set up feeling that in a crash my legs would be trapped and I couldn't get out of the outfit. Plus a couple of other small things they wanted to see changed. I made the changes and went back for the July meet last Sunday. It passed scrutiny with no problems. Havig not had it out the first run was also going to be the test run. I took it easy and it ran 171.777 kph. Not very fast but for a first run I was happy. The motor is capable of over 200 kph and the goal is 215 kph. So i think it was a good start. Heres a couple of photos.

The new steeing set up goes under my legs

See Ya!

Like I said the target is 215 kph. The Norton with a similar Weslake 500 ran 209 kph so I think with better streamlining 215 kph (or maybe even a bit more) is possible. We shall see.

Wow, this is a very nice looking sidecar!
I've an MZ sidecar, but that won't make the 215 kph in a lifetime Very Happy

Must be great to ride on a salt lake, pitty we don't have 'em around in Holland.
I saw the really good movie "the worlds fastest indian" a couple of days ago, your pictures remind me of that, hope your adventure is just as awsome!
Good luck making the 215 kph!

Its been a while since I was here. The sidecar has been out a couple more times and each time it gets a bit faster. It was out at El Mirage on Sunday 13th of Sept. The weather was very pleasant instead of stinking hot but the lakebed is in terrible condition. The sidecar ran a strong 197.745 Km/h. I was over the moon! Next month I am hoping it will go over 200 Km/h.

After the run. I snapped this without thinking but I kind of like the shot.

The clip must be hosted on youtube (for example). If it is, just post here the link to the youtube page, I'll do the rest!

We got out to El Mirage May 15th for the 2010 season opener. I was running on a 110.116 mph record. Despite having a clutch problem the sidecar ran 116.798 mph for a new record. Heres a short video of me starting it just after we unloaded it. And a couple of photos by photographer Zane Mc Nary.

Congrats on the new record! The sound of the Weslake is great. Here in Europe there are some classic race sidecars with the two cilinder Weslake engine, they go like hell.

This is a short video shot at the May El Mirage meeting of the sidecar being started. I am a member of the Road Runners car club. The oldest club in the SCTA (started 1937) and the truck towing the roadster belongs to fellow club member Jim Kitchen. Its a 210 mph Street Roadster.
