My next project: another kawa Z650

Post  650zed on Tue 1 Sep - 16:53

Here is my next project.
Of course, its (again!) a Z650
(for newcomers, my first Z650 project: 1979 Z650D2)

Here is a couple of pics I took yesterday.
The photos were taken a bit quickly I was just back - but of course other (better) pictures will follow very soon

Its a Z650 B1 from 1977, a very good base for a lot of fun, I think!

First of all, I have quite some necessary "basic" work to do:
new oil, oil filter, air filter, starting plugs, new battery, new rear tire, and so on.
Then make sure everything is fine with the ignition, the carbs, etc.

Next thing will be to take care of this horrible handlebar and to do something about the ugly paint on the exhaust pipes.
Then I will take a look at the rest, the back of the bike and the seat keep it or not, I quite like it
and, of course, I will give all this a bit of shine!

I can't wait to start with it...!

Hi Zed - nice new start - but you are a "routinier" for this typ - that make a lot things easy than the first project.
So have some fun - see you in October.

alright Z , promising it is ! , The seat is already sportive as it is classic. I woud not do much about it. Are you going to dissamble the motor in its whole ?
The handlebar looks goofy indeed. (No disrespect to Goofy in any way)

A good Clubman bar or some clip-ons will do the trick on this baby.

Hell yeah cheers

First update:

Yesterday I offered my Zed her new battery, she was very pleased!
Now I don't need to push her anymore, to start in the morning
She starts with one single kick, isn't it brillant?

Yesterday I removed her ugly handlebar to put this ace-bar, muuuUUUUuuuch better:

And here she was, this morning:

I'm hesitating about the seat. I love this kind of classic sport seats. On the other hand, I'm also very fond of the Ducati-like mono-seats, they look really cool and I have had good experience with them...

I will first strip the back and see how to remove the rear mudguard and make some fixation for the number plate.
This way, I will see how this all looks like and what is possible.

I'll keep you updated, but first I need to do some "basic" work for her this week-end (tire, oil, filters, you name it...).

Cool project.

Altough she seems to be in a pretty good condition already.
I like the colour and the seat also even if it is not cafestyle.

Curious about the result.

Yes, surprisingly shes in a quite good condition. And the engine runs perfectly, its also a bit more powerfull than the one I had before. She reacts very well and I can use the horses at pretty low RPM
I removed the back wheel yesterday and checked the brakes, they are also in a very good condition. It all just needed a bit of cleaning, grease and polishing. Which I was happy to do for her, of course...!

Well, it was pretty simple: the first Zed was finished, there was nothing else I could change, to my own taste. So I was starting to turn in circles... I didn't have enough money to start a second project and also no room... So I decided to try to sell her. But at the same time, I was hesitating a lot... Shouldn't I better keep her... I couldn't make up my mind. So I just gave it a chance and left it to Holly Kawasaki: I placed an advert on marktplaats to sell her, thinking: if I'm offered enough, I do sell her, otherwise I just keep her and enjoy her, that's it.
And then she was sold within 4 days.

NEW UPDATE
------------
I put a new rear tire, cleaned and polished the back wheel/drum (anybody knows how to bring old spokes back to life, when they've become crusty-brown...? ).

I tried again to clean off the black paint from the exhaust, but without any luck so I gave it up and just painted it again in mat black.
I's not exactly what I wanted - I much prefer chrome - but this will be for the next pipes in the future.

I put new sparkplugs, air filter, etc. I changed the engine oil, and still got some little oil leaking problem underneath to solve this week-end.

After this, I intent to take care of the rear fender. I dunno yet what I'm going to do exactly, but I'm thinking really hard about it

I'll keep you updated

Hi zed - i`m surprised that you cannot take of the paint with the acetone fluid. Ok, it is like it is. Other possibilty to give the pipes a "chrom" finish is a ceramic coating. I don`t know the price, but i`ve seen the result!
I looks very good. You what to know more - mail to me!

Thanx Andreas, but for the time being I'm going to keep it black, I just painted it... That was also the best solution to keep it low-budget, I think.

Re: My next project: another kawa Z650

Post  650zed on Tue 15 Sep - 11:43

I worked again on my Zed, yesterday. I had some leaking problems.

The oil plug was leaking, and I noticed that the problem was not in the plug but on the oil pan, which was not flat anymore... Also, there seemed to be some trouble with the threading inside the oil pan... Hum...

I filed a thick gasket on one side, in order to make it thinner on the back and to leave it thicker on the other side, to compensate the problem on the surface of the oil pan, and I added a second (softer) gasket:

It looks like it's not leaking anymore. We'll see...

Second problem: the bolt of the oil filter was completely round, thanx to the previous owner
Impossible to remove it...
So I managed to remove it by filing it under the bike and this way by giving it a reasonable "shape" (enough to take it off anyway).
After that, I could easily "reshape" it: it's not a 17 bolt anymore, but a 16 bolt, now

So, now at last I can start working on the back of the bike, removing the rear fender, etc. and think about what to do there!

More news soon!

Yeah, previous owner's repairs can be a pain. One of the previous owners of my Tiger "modified" a Bonnie air box with a hack saw to make a Tiger one...... ......I've ditched the whole air box idea and gone for a single K&N.

Good luck with the project.

Not a lot of progression since a couple of weeks, as I'm more looking for parts than working on the bike, at the moment
I could score a nice chrome taillight, a short rear fender and an old tank

but I'm still looking for side panels and a cool seat...
and I have some little ignition problems I need to solve first, so more news soon, I hope...!

Re: My next project: another kawa Z650

Post  650zed on Thu 5 Nov - 11:38

Some updates.

I finally could find some time to mount the short rear fender and to give my Zed a proper colour: black

Now she starts to look like something cool...

I still have to work on the taillight, but this will come together with a new seat.

I've been working quite a lot on the seat, but without any real result...

I first tried a seat which I thought would fit her nicely (as I don't want to shorten the frame and as I also don't want to use the "standard" long Ducati seat as I did for my previous zed). So I gave it a try with this one:

I did my best, trying all positions and possibilities, changing everything a hundred times, but eventually I had to come to the conclusion that it would not fit the bike...
Time, money and work for nothing.
And this seat is now to sell.

So now, for the time being, my Zed stays with the big (original) kawa seat, because now I want to ride my bike, after more than 2 long weeks without any fresh wind on my face .

And in between I'm making some deep thinking and working on different ideas for a more personal seat, but I cannot make up my mind so far...
scratch

More news and updates soon (I hope) !

hi zed,

nice bike you got.

to me, it looks better whit the original seat, i like the black.
when it was my bike, i should mount some other brackets for the headlight, so that you can lower it for 5 centimeters, and i should mount some clip-ons.
than it looks like a real caferacer to me!!
but again, very nice bike!! keep up the good work!!

I did the paintjob myself, yes, taking it easy, slowly and doing my best... Embarassed It's far from perfect, when you look at it closely, and it's true that black reveals all mistakes... But it's pretty shiny, that helps a lot!
Anyway, black is the only colour for me, with a kawa Z.
It has to be black.

About clip-ons, I though many times about it, but I would need to change the tank, because otherwhise I would loose to much angle in rotation... And I love the shape of the Z-serie tanks, that's my weakness
Still, it's true that she could be a bit lowered...

For the seat, I keep this one for the moment because now I want to ride my bike, after more than 2 weeks still... But I will soon take care of that question and mount a cafe racer seat.
