1983 Suzuki GR650 Tempter Cafe Racer Project

Post  jfg75 on Mon 21 Sep - 19:04

This is my 1983 Suzuki GR 650 Tempter X. It was a piece of junk when I purchased it for 250 bucks. It is still a work in progress for sure but ill get there.

I have plans to remove all the blinkers and add custom taillights.

A good project. Good base, spoke wheels, nice.
There's a lot to do, but there is no doubt that you can create a beautifull cafe racer out of her!
Have fun, and keep us updated!

Yep, that could be a nice project bike...I'm working on removing black paint off my carbs right now.

If it works, let us know how you do this! Cos I've just tried everything I could to remove some (baked) black paint off my exhaust pipes and I gave it up...
Finally, I painted them black again, so that it looks at least a bit cleaner...
But I'd be curious to know how to remove this, for a next time... Without sanding of course, because of the chrome...

I did, but no result at all. The paint was really "bakked" on the pipes.
Impossible to remove it without sanding, which I didnot want to do, cos I was hoping to preserve the chrome...

If they are chrome underneath the black paint you could take a buffing wheel to them. Mine are so rusted I have to wire wheel or sand them.

My carbs are not painted. My bike had a lot of dirt and rust. The motor came stock black. So I removed it and repainted it flat black. I then painted the rest of the bike flat black and added clubman handlebars. I am removing the blinkers. I soon will be building sidepanel covers out of diamond plate and start figuring out what I want to do for a taillight. Because I am a student cash as always tends to be at a low. So the rusted exhaust will have to wait a bit. This for now will be a cheap build with a flat black style. Because like most of you will prob understand..... I JUST WANT TO RIDE... I believe the style will suit me. The process will be slow but I will stay updated and hopefully the bike will still be a fun decent looking ride.

Went for my first ride today after fixing my carbs, removing blinkers, fixing tail light, and recovering my seat. My bike ran great and very strong. I rode for around forty five minutes. Very enjoyable! I hope to have pics soon. I only have 290 dollars invested in the entire bike. The ride made all the work worth it.

Im starting up my project again. I have now removed all the blinkers. I have also reupholstered the seat after reshaping it.

Future Plans
-build side panels
-rebuild new exhaust
-build a traditional cafe style rear fairing
-new taillights
-new blinkers

Does anyone have an opinion or know a good place on the web to research and purchase taillights styles and blinker styles?
