New project: SP370

Post  MIOB on Thu 8 Oct - 11:39

I've gotten a new bike to work on, or better put: some parts to work on. It's supposed to be a 1980 Suzuki SP370:

I've already done some work:

It's going to be a cafe-ish bike with spoked wheels, a seatpipe and probably a aluminium bellypan.

I'm missing key parts like the rear fork, the upper triple tree, the wiringloom and an exhasut. So if anyone (in Europe :)) on this forum has any tips about getting those (it appears to be pretty hard to find parts for an SP) has any tips, please tell me!

nice project, as for the fork and swingarm: I would focus on fitting parts from other bikes in there. The exhaust however I am not sure of, you could try an yamaha sr500 exhaust but I think its too big.

Thanx! I've heard that a GN250 swingarm will work too. That means that I now know where I can buy what for what price. So parts shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I started work on the rear end this morning. The stainless cup will be the endcap of the underseat exhasut.

Some progress:

Turned CX500 handelbars (ugly) into MIOB-handlebars (cool Wink):

Fitted a GN swingarm too (wasn't easy, it was way to wide, had to cut it in half and eweld it).

Made brackets for the headlight and mounted it:

Result:

I'm now eagerly awaiting my wheels. One has to come form Germany, the other from the south of limburg. Can't wait.

I'm also still looking for the electrics (CDI!!), so if anyone here knows where to find anything....

I am going for gold and yes, I will get spoked wheels. That wheel is just an old, bent, BMW wheel I had and I used it to get a better feel for the bike.

did a little bit of work on the Suzuki again. Moved the sidestand (and made it shorter) and finished the shifte rear set. It works really well and I'm very happy with it.

Ok, Update:

Finished the rearsets, new rear shocks, did a ton of other small stuff, made a new wiring loom form scratch and tested it:

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/FnIOXS57aaE&hl=nl_NL&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/FnIOXS57aaE&hl=nl_NL&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Still a lot left to do, but I'm getting there.

Re: New project: SP370

and I made progress again:

Thought I had a problem with the head gasket, turned out to be a combination of some other minor problems leading to the wrong conclusion. I fixed all those problems and took it for a first ride. It rides really nice actually. It's very light so acceleration is fabulous. Handling is also better than I'd expected (with the knobby tires). I do have to work on the brakes though, those aren't good enough by far. Also need to change the exhaust. Thought it sounds fabulous, it's also incredibly LOUD. I'm not a big fan of loud bikes, so I'll have to make something up.

Hi Miob - you are soooo crazy - so be lucky, that you can ride in NL without special techniccontrol.
Do you make a film from your ride? I will hear - what´s loud!!

Don't worry, most of the bike is technically fine and you have to test it at some stage. If you don't ride it you'll never know that the brakes should be better. I now know what to improve on the bike, so I'll do that first before I ride again. If I get the brake to work better it shoudl pass any technical test.

The only thing wrong with the sound (it sounds exactly like it sounds on the video at around14 seconds) is that it's too loud.

Re: New project: SP370

Post  MIOB on Sun 7 Mar - 10:59

I like my neigbours, so no, I don't want it to be loud. Especially since it's my intention to use this bike as a 'easy to grab' bike. It's quite a lot of work to get the BMW or the CX out of the shed and the garden. Th SP is very light and really easy to maneuver so it's going to be really easy to take the SP when my girlfriend wants to go to the horses or when I need to go to the university for something small (it's 30 minutes each way by bicycle and that's a lot when you just have to drop something off).

Anyway: I have the bike ensured now, so I could take it for a longer testride yesterday.

So what's changed? Found a new headlight, I love the old one too much to leave it out in the rain. I cleaned and adjusted the front brake (it's working better now, but I think there's still room for some improvement) and I hooked up the rear brake (which is working fabulously).

Also found quite some problems during the testride unfortunately. I think the head gasket is leaking after all. Got a new one ready though, so that's doable. It's also misfiring/spitting fuel out of the carb occasionally. That'll need some tuning. Bigger problems are the handling and heavy oil use, though the latter might (hopefully) be due to the head gasket problem. Somehow there's a lot of oil getting in the combustion chamber, it's smoking a lot and the exhaust is really oily on the inside now. As I said: hopefully it's just a really bad head gasket....
The handling bis the other major thing. It's a bit hard to turn in, but once you're in a turn the bike really wants to fall into the corner. I'm not sure if that's due to the knobby tires (and the shape of the tires, especially the rear tire is a bit 'square') or due to the stance of the bike (or a combination of both). I think I'll just play around with the stance (easy to adjust) to see what happens.
Anyone a clue if I should make the front higher or lower when it acts like that?
