Dutch Triton pre-unit
Hello ton-up boys & girls,
My name is Jilles-Sicco van Dijk. I live in Leiderdorp, the Netherlands. Altough I have taken note of this forum before, I didn't get to registration previous, sorry!
Since a couple of months I own a WideLine pre-unit Triton, after a 20 year search! (Money matter as well, I'd have to admit.) Even though I have ridden modern Ducatis for a long time and currently own an R1, my first true love really has always been a Triton.
As I work with a Japanese company as International salesman, I do not get to ride my bikes or cars as often as I'd like. This will keep it a hobby, I keep telling myself. ;-)
I got the bug around 1986, when I saw a local biker start what I later understood to be a black 750 Fastback. I'll never forget that noise! Sounded like music to my ears and really made an impression on the spotted teen I was back then. (Although less spotty now, some of my mates still regard me a non-conformist teenager!)
Although my Triton is in quite reasonable nick, I do intend to "dot the i's" on it the next 2 years. It is built to the classic fifties/sixties look I love so much. Hell, I still sport the LUCAS Dyno and no lighting! (Yet.)
A WideLine was a definite must for me, with a preference for a pre-unit T120 engine. Seems like someone changed the original cilinder head on the bike for a unit T120 one somewhere during these past 53 years. (Registration is for a 1956 "Triton Cafe racer, engine brand Triumph, 650 cc". Nice!)
I changed the oil tank for a new aluminium Manx type, as the previous one was altered to accept a single carburetor. (Thanks to John Williams of the Tank Shop, Dumfries, Scotland!) I machined a steering damper for the bike, though I never really intend to use it. (I rekon these things were only devised to take care of other problems, but that's an entirely different story altogether.)
The cilinderhead will have to be lifted this winter; It doesn't just leak, it seeps oil. Also the right exhaust displays blue smoke, so I guess it is time to check valve guides and piston rings. (I hope.)
Also, the rear brake hub will have to be blasted this winter, as someone seems to have sprayed it black somewhere along the line. Will give me the opportunity to have these nice period-looking AVON Speedmasters fitted, as well...
I have seen this year's "Bike of the year" election closes 15th of November. Even though I am a realist, I will still try and get some pics of the bike on that thread. If only for demonstration purposes.
This picture-bucket uploading and linking is incomprehensible to me, I'm sorry. So I'll try and send these to the moderator.
Thanks again all and hope to see some of you on short term!
Best regards,
Jilles.
