what about http://www.xs650.de/forum/ or the site from nederland http://www.xs650.nl/.
there is a guy hein weijers,he has good ideas for example oilfilter and so on.
you must definatly change to an other oilfiltersystem!

I noticed a lot of XS engines are beeing rebuild to an external oilfilter-system.. why??
Is there something wrong or with the original system?

hy,my english is not so good to explain the technical things.
the original filter is just paper and that can break really easy.
another pro is that you have more cooling in an external system.

this in an idea of hein weijners from the xs club in holland
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff288/britbike/oliefilter1c.jpg

most people in germany ride with this system
http://www.cokaste.de/4655/4682.html

with this you can use auto-filters from renault(cheap and easy to change).

the xs650 is a really cool bike, but has a few diseases as
-the oilfiltersystem
-the ignition that you have to displaced witch an electronic ignition
-timingchain clamp(i don't know if clamp is the right word)
-electric generator

so that was the reason i sold my xs.but it is definatly a cool bike.

I see your home is in Baarle so Dutch will be no problem. Purchace the workshop manual from the Dutch XS650 club!

It's a very usefull book, written in Dutch, with a lot of extra information and very worth the price.
Jerry v/d Heiden from Heiden tuning (XS650 specialist) has helped writing the manual.

I have used it rebuilding my XS650 engine.
http://www.xs650.nl/shop/slides/werkplaatshandboek.htm
(It's placed under the 'giftshop' at the homepage.)

Slopen die handel!

Post  Z666 on Wed 20 Jan - 19:02

first pictures of the disassembly

The engine is a mess! But in XS650 terms its all "normal" they say.Rolling Eyes

*Startergear completely worn ( no teeth left )....
*Sumpfilter broken ---> iron from the gear thru the oilpump! Yeehaw! but the second filter kept it from going tot the expensive parts Shocked
*Pistons a little worn
*camchainguide worn

Viva z650's! never seen an engine as bad as this one! The crazy thing is that thes errors are all in the design of the engine!!! Shocked
So...Let the spending begin!!!

Startersystem:

At last! now i can start with the interesting things!!

Who needs a startersprocket? The kickstarter is not for show! Cool

I have removed the complete starter motor with the sprockets and use only the kickstarter. I caped the hole in the engine with a plug (available at Heiden tuning) and placed the external oilfilter at that place.

Re: XS 650 Engine Rebuild

With my Z650 i did this too and after 4 years i changed i back. I must say its a lot easier if your bike wont start that good or if it is on the workbench.( haha i already know what your thinking now..."wont start that good????" )

So.... you have a startersprocket in spare for me!! or is it broken too scratch

What did you do with the sumpfilter? and why did you use the external oilfilter? i've seen this many times on XS engines but i dont understand the real purpose of this filter? its behind the oilpump..so if the sumpfilter has its usual problem again the pump gets broken again? scratch

I'm not sure yet what i'm gonna do, but i think changing the sump filter to a spin-on filter and leaving the little meshfilter for what it is, seems a more plausible correction for the problems these engines face. Or am i thinking wrong?

But putting a filter a the starterengine is a cool idea! hmmm...

hey,
if you don't want to use an external oilfiltersystem check this site http://www.xs650.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15867
ok it's in german but go throu the pages and have a look at the pics.maybe that can be an inspiration.
my xs is already sold, but if you love your bike i would advise this version. http://www.cokaste.de/4655/4682.html

dennis

sure, the little filter in the right side of the engine has to stay

Re: XS 650 Engine Rebuild

Thanks for the links dennis.
I've been reading these kind of forums for a while now
With the solution in the enginecompartment i already saw problems of the filter getting damaged..
So there are loads of discussions about pressures in the carter and so on, but i think its just the pressuredrop over the filter that makes it collapse..
So if you have a filter in an iron body and both sides of the filter are secured by a strong iron mesh (like the standard spin-on carfilter) the solution is simple.
But i can understand some people have time enough and just like to re-invent the wheel or something like that on a nice sunday afternoon! haha cyclops

For my opinion the second Link is the best way to deal with the problem but i think 80-90 euros is expensive.....

you should take the filter from cokaste.de i think.
you pay 80 but just for one time.after that, you
have an easy oil-change just screw the filter
out and another in.that's it!
and you don't have to buy or to change the filter
from the sumpfilterplate and also the system works with
an renault car-filter wich is very cheap.maybe 7.
that's a really advantage.
the filter drafts the oil on on the suction side.
i don't know a better system.
for me the only negative reason could be the
chassis clearence.but before the filter scratches
your mainfolds would get damaged.
so,that will not be a real problem Suspect
