1980 XS850

Post  kinematica on Thu 3 Jun - 15:09

This is my XS850 I got for free last summer. It was a total basket case and needed some love. I wanted a Honda CX500, but what the hell, this was free. I had to do a complete tear down on the bike and learned a lot in the process. I really like the Yamaha triples (XS750/XS850) and would like to give another one the cafe treatment. Although my bike is not quite finished yet, I feel it is ready to show off a bit.

Thank you all for your kind words. I will try to upload larger pictures. I really don't know why they ended up so small. Kornfed, I have a picture of your bike hanging in my garage as one of my "wall of inspiration" bikes.

The whole bike was painted with a spray can. I wanted to powdercoat the frame but I really didn't want to spend the money. The frame was painted with duplicolor wheel paint and then clear coated, the engine has a couple coats of high heat (500 deg F) gloss black and the body work is wearing duplicolor exact match automotive paint.

XS TRIPLE CAFE RACER

Post  Hank on Mon 7 Jun - 17:41

Hallo Kinematica, you've got the best of them. It seems that al the problems were solved with the XS 850.
Riding a triple Yamaha is very nice, the best between both worlds ( twins en quattro's ),
Good luck,
Hank ( Hanx Triple )

This is the exhaust I am currently running. It is made of 2.25" aluminized mandrel bent tubing I had laying around the garage. It has some aluminum baffles inside for sound dampening and some fiberglass packing. After some experimentation, I got it down to an acceptable (for me) sound level.

I have totally stripped my bike again and started the next phase. The front end is from an 05 Kawasaki ZX6R. The rear mono shock is from an 06 Yamaha R1.
The original tear drop gas tank was split in half and expanded to make room for the new battery location under the tank. All the electronics will find a new home under a new tail that I will make from fiberglass. It is far from finished, but it is looking good.

That's a redical change! I'm curious about the result.
Are you still gonna use the exhaust?

I am not really a big fan of the styling of the MAC 3 into 1 pipes. If I keep it, I will make a new muffler/tailpipe. Most likely, I will fab up a 3 into 1 header of a design very similar to what is on your green bike.

Finally finished fabricating the swing arm and put the ZX-6 rear wheel on. I really like the way it looks! The 180 tire makes a huge difference.
