A friendly Kraut

Post  caffbeemer on Wed 3 Nov - 15:49

Yes,

they indeed exist. At least my deerest gracious mum thinks that of her beloved son.

Roight, my name is Hanns-Peter. I`m into cafe racers since I got me first real boik way back in the past millenium - 1980. At that time I got a 90/6 2 valve beemer, which I instantly converted into a caff by putting on clip on´s, megaphones, etc. Cafe Racers on road were quite unusual in the early 80ies in the fatherland, hardly any caffs in sight. At that time - shame on me - i would not have even heard about a place called the Ace Cafe. Which was to change. First, I got an older magazine and instantly felt electrified with the Ton Up, Ace Cafe and Cafe Racer history and style, which to me resembled some of the core elements of speeding, blasting and throbbing. A bike would get you to unknown places, to work, home, a nise gig, the Ardennes and Alps, onto a race track, to your girl friend, and sometimes into trouble....

In 1996 a friend of mine - apparently a Dutch motor journalist (Michiel van Dam from Amsterdam) - told me about a reportage he was to do re the Ace Caff. Making interviews with the cats who started the Ace Reunion, taking some photos and all that, I joined him to cover the story for German bike mag Motorrad.

So I got to know this London lad, Mr. Mark Wilsmore and his charming wife Linda. We sat in their North London flat and chatted boiks, RnR, speed, caffs, and all that. Being German and to escape the subsequent and inevitable "don´t mention the war" thing, I picked up on Mark´s introduction telling us he was a police officer riding horses, by pointing to a picture at the wall showing a horse called Dresden. I asked Mark if it was a popular thing in the UK naming horses after flat bombed German cities. Which instantly reverted "faulty towers" and broke the ice - if there was such at all.

You guys bet Mark and his mates did not deny any opportunity to take the piss out of friendly Kraut in the years to follow. Which was heartly returned.

After the interview I was really fascinated with Mark´s plans to reopen the orginal Ace Caff and offerd some support - not knowing what would arise...

To keep an already long story somewhat short - from that visit on strong bounds developed and I started running the German branch to support and develop the Ace Cafe project in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. ( Links: Ace Cafe London German Website, AceCafeShop, Rockers Jeans )

After all those years, I still enjoy throbbing my beloved caffinated beemer, riding on the Continental Run to Ace Cafe and meeting nice people from all over world sharing the passion for that very distinctive caff style.

I hope I have somehow qualified for this fine forum. Perhaps my caff beemer, which I ride for some 18 years now, helps making the edge...

Hi Miob,

thanks for welcoming.

I just spotted your R80 project. It´s swell and looks damned cool.
I have placed some tec specs of my red beemer under "Cafe Racers" in case one would wish to dive into some details.
Quite an array of finest machinery gathering here..., just looking through all of it.

Welcome to the forum.
Beautifull beemer...!
You sure qualify for the forum - except for those links you're actually not allowed to post in a first post, but never mind: let's make an exception.

Welcome again.

Hallo Andreas,

merci, aber die Commando gehört nicht mir, sondern dem Gewinner des diesjährigen Cafe Racer Ride Out zur Ace Reunion, Hansi aus NI. Das Ding geht auch wirklich gut. Und hält.

To not leave non German speaking members in the dark, the rest in English language....

True, not too many Germans around here. It seems they prefer staying within their "brand community" rather than teaming up on an international scale. Wich I think is a pitty since "caff culture", etc. today has - even though clearly inspired by those cats starting it in the UK back in the 50ies - turned into a "global affair" with ton up clubs, ride outs and caff meets everywhere, providing a vast array of input and lots of facets.

Thanks again for your friendly welcome and look forward to seeing you on road some day.

brgds
