Z650 - update 26th June 09

Post  650zed on Tue 23 Sep - 18:24

I just realized that I never properly introduced my own bike, in the "member's Projects" section.
So, here we go!

Here's the story, in short:

I've had a Z650 for years (Z 650 C3 from 1978), a very good, cool and reliable bike. She's been my only vehicle and everyday ride for more than 10 years and I rode a loOOoot of km without any trouble. I became a kind of Kawasaki fan.
After this one, as I could not afford my kawa dreambikes (Z1 / Z900 and H2), I started to look for another Z650.

After a couple of months of a hard search for a sound bike at a reasonable price, I found this one: Z 650 D 1979 (also called 650SR). I didn't like her custom look at all, but I knew she was just a normal Zed from the Z-series: in 1979, when Kawasaki wanted to bring out some new model after 2 years of Z650, to fight their concurrents, they didn’t want to spend their money: so they only changed the tank, seat and handlebar, and named it "SR". But the bike was exactly the same, like all other KZ650's from the Seventies, not a single change.
When I tried her out, I recognized everything from my ancient Z650 from 1978. So I knew she was a perfect base, and also not too expensive because of her – ugly – custom/chopper look. Perfect! For the rest, she was in a good technical condition so...
I adopted her!

She proved to be a good choice, afterwards: the only problem I discovered, after about a month of riding, was at the right brake caliper, at the front wheel: it was completely rusted and was pressing more and more on the disc.
So I bought on Internet a complete brake caliper from a Z650 from 1977 (for 10 euro's...! That is the great advantage of the Z650 series: you find parts everywhere, at very reasonable prices and nearly all models/years fit on each other). I cleaned and greased the '77 caliper, mounted it on my zed, put new brake liquid and that was it!

I didn't have any other problem yet, in more than a year of riding and quite some kilometers on the clock already, as I ride all year long...

Good bikes, the Z650's!

So, here's what she was looking like, when I first got her:

- I changed the ugly custom seat, for a cool Seventies "one-and-half" seat;
- I put a nice M-bar;
- I removed the ugly 'custom' tank and put a traditional Zed tank - after repair/new paint;
- I took off the big mirrors and mounted a short one in the M-bar;
- I changed the color of the wheels, tank and all covers;
- I added some personal details like: headlight visor, self-made decals out of vinyl sticker paper (flags, checked bands, skulls) on tank, side covers, etc;

And now, she's like this:
(Pictures taken on 20 sept 2008 at the Woerden "Veteraan Treffe")

(I will add more photos as soon as possible...)

All together, a great bike I recommend absolutely: unbreakable, not too expensive, easy to repair/find parts, good temper, always ready for a ride, fast and nervous, full of character...!

Still, she's not finished yet... I don't think she will ever be finished... I'm already looking for a smaller round seat

New update.

I ordered a Ducati seat from Ruig's Polyester:

I finished it yesterday, after I made some little changes of course, like an opening on the back to use it as a gloves compartment for tools and locks. I covered it using the seat cover and foam from an old z650 seat.

Mooi gemaakt zo.
Ook de bekleding.

Misschien ook nog een wat kleiner achterlicht erop om het af te maken?

Your bike is getting a more classic look. And i agree with Kornfed, a smaller rear light would look nice and maybe classic spoke wheels to finish the job.

The taillight is big, that's a point. But right now, I'm busy with the M-bar. I was hesitating for a while, about getting me some clip-ons, but the problem is that the zed has a big tank and I'm going to lose a lot on the rotation angle of the fork, as the clip-ons will touch the tank... One possibility was to place the clip-ons on the top of the ´front T´ of the fork, but I hesitate... I'm thinking now more to move the turning lights (place them somewhere else) to get more space to move down the M bar. That would make quite a change...
