Another gs 550

Post  RaceRon on Tue 20 Jan - 23:10

At the moment I have changed the hight of the mufflers, footpegs en the rear end of the bike. The front is a bit lowerd and clip ons are installed. The original revs counter is installed centrally and a digital odometer is installed too. I also changed the brake hoses in steel brake lines and started overhauling the calipers, but ran in to some trouble getting the correct seals of 38 mm.
The rearwheel is also painted black, and I'm still thinking of which colour the bike will be repainted, any good suggestions?

Shocked I like it too!

These colours aren't so bad though. I like the very bright colours. It looks a bit like a dirt or flattracker.

I used an electonic speedometer from sigma, it's a bicycle computer! On the bottom of the front fork i placed the sensor (you can see it on the picture). Yesterday I completely dismanteled the bike, I took out the engine and all parts are removed. I'll start completely from zero building the bike together again, starting with the framework. The parts that I don't use are removed of the frame (like passenger footpegs etc. etc) and I'll start sanding and painting the frame. The engine is dismantled also, and new seals etc will be installed.
I also bought a second gs 550 (1979) which i can use for spare parts. Ofcourse pictures will be shown on this forum!

Thanks for the comments. I'm in no hurry so it will probably take some months to get things fixed. Because of my job there isn't a lot of free time, and due to my other hobby's (taking good care of our pets (Friesian horses, dogs, cats, rabbits etc.) and cycling with a racebike) I have to make choises what to do, but probably you all have similar problems! Oeps, almost forgot to mention that I also must spent some (quality)time with my wife......! Very Happy

I was looking for tacho's and speedometers and I came across this one; http://www.josdijkman.nl/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=4869 a bit expensive but it screams SPEED to me. Not really it if you're looking for an old school cafélook. But it sure beats my original Gscockpit

Sorry, forgot to mention my plans. I'm thinking to get the frame painted in black, including the wheels etc. The basis color will stay blue with white decals, and Barry Sheene's racenumber 7 will be sprayed or stickerd in original yellow and black.

It sure looks great, but like you mentioned not for an old school look. In my opinion there should be a centrally placed tacho so that is where i'm aiming for. A speedometer isn't important for the looks, but driving without it is quit tricky on the road, therefor i put a small bicycle speedmeter in stead of a big one (and the costs are very low, about 15-20 euro) cheers

Like i wrote, I bought a spare bike, a 1979 gs 550. cheers

For this moment I mixed the two bikes to test the engine etc etc so i can decide which parts I can use best!
I changed the brakes wheels etc. and reshaped the original front fender(?) and changed the headlight for the original.
I think the original headlight looks good on the bike because a typical 70's bike had a big headlight.
Let me know how you think about this, the big or the smaller headlight should be installed????? scratch

Great project, RaceRon!

I'm also thinking more and more about a Suzuki, as a second bike. It's just that question of space and time... I'm a kawa Z maniac, but I must say that I really like the look of the GS's and the GT's.

Thanks for the possitive comments. I liked the seat, but made some changes to it, now i'm able to mount the tail light and licenceplate underneath it, in stead of on the back of it.

I started to make a second seat, using te original back end (cover), and make it a pure single seater. Probably i will finish it off too, so i can change the looks of the bike in a very simple way just by changing seats. cheers
